Contrary to other art history sectors, media art history has not a single, or only a few of prominent scholars. For its own nature, the majority of them have developed in years specific knowledge and studies that couldn't have been omni-comprehensive. The inter-relationship of art, science and technology is the original mission of the Leonardo magazine, so for its MIT Press' Book series this is a perfect title. After the "Refresh!" and "RE:place" conferences on media art history, some of the relevant academic human capital has been involved in this anthology, assembling one of the few reliable educational references. It is intended to be about "media art", with no strict need to add the overused "new" adjective in the beginning, therefore the topics timeline starts in the thirteenth century. But, the (media art) histories are many and they still need to be told. So it'll be essential to find new edited anthologies (here or in other series) before the next ("re:")conference.
