After celebrating its 20 years anniversary in 2007, Transmediale festival is back, starting in Berlin in a few days. Club Transmediale, the independent music fellow festival, is already started (on January 25), the exhibition opening is on January 29 and the festival officially starts the day after. After the seven years directed by Andreas Broeckmann, the new director Stephen Kovats has already impressed a personal mark on the event, that is hosted back in the renewed beautiful architecture of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. The theme first, "Conspire", is fresh and appealing, but at the same time substantial, and really embodied in the program, so you can imagine what to expect. Then the structure: this year the Salon part will be inspired in its structure by the theme's history (from the famous Bilderberg Group, especially) with a formula that promise to be new and even controversial. Furthermore a proper catalogue of such an event is for the first time produced in the form of a book, going well beyond the program guides of the past. The premises seem to explore a dark, promising and scaring vision of our future, that lies in everyday fears and generated fantasies, and then find its ways in the digital culture latest concerns and developments. Will all the promises of this new edition go a step further to the very good work of the previous years (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007)? We will see.
