edited by Sarah Cook, Sara Diamond - Riverside Architectural Press / ABC Art Books Canada [book + DVD-ROM], ISBN: 9781894773225, 1100 pages, 2012, English
This imposing tome of more than one thousand pages is not too big once you realize that it hosts a systematized archive of ten years of dialogues at the seminal Banff New Media Institute from 1995 to 2005. There are 150 original transcripts obtained from thousands of hours of recordings of various events, including the annual "Interactive Screen ." But this is not a "family album" nor a mere repository of materials on paper, but a specially conceived archive in the form of a book, sorting out a decade of activities, historicizing their international protagonists and their contributions thematically. Categories include classic topics like "Social/Individual Identity in New Media", "The Material Known as Data" or "Staying Human/Becoming Machine" alongside more specific chapters on "Money & Law" and "Production & Distribution in Models of Collaborative Practice", while the fourth chapter is a catalogue-in-a-book, documenting the exhibition "The art formerly known as new media" curated by Sara Diamond and Steve Dietz in 2005. The huge transcribing effort adds to the unique value of this book - the texts, presentations and dialogues were all previously unpublished in this form and now more often than not contain additional information. A detailed list of events is included and, as a perfect companion, the book comes with a DVD-ROM containing the full collection of the HorizonZero electronic journal produced at Banff from 2002 to 2004.
